Changing Our Habits To Ones That Serve Us

Habits are the key to unlocking potential. They offer our brains a way to go on autopilot, saving precious decision making power for other more important decisions. This can be a huge benefit if we have CHOSEN habits that serve us. Can we choose our habits? How do we go about changing a habit? What habits have been beneficial to top performers and champions of life? If your curious about the answer to these questions, you’re in the right place.

Printing out photos to send as postcards is one of my favorite habits.

The purpose of this post is to curate the best resources to learn about habits, and what habits have made the biggest positive impact in my life.

Top Three Resources to Learn About Habits

The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business
 By Charles Duhig

If you read one book on habits, make it this one! “The Power Of Habit helps you understand why habits are at the core of everything you do, how you can change them, and what impact that will have on your life, your business and society.”  I recommend listening this book on audible. More about audible below.

This website is a treasure trove on habits and mindfulness. The author Leo Babauta describes Zen Habits like this, “ Zen Habits is about finding simplicity and mindfulness in the daily chaos of our lives. It’s about clearing the clutter so we can focus on what’s important, create something amazing, find happiness. It has over a million readers.”

Habit Tracker

What gets recorded gets managed. This isn’t a resource to learn about habits but it has been extremely helpful for me to make sure I’m staying on track. My routine is to open the app before I go to bed and check off the habits I completed during the day that I’ve decided to work on. Right now I’m on a 28 day streak of meditation! Having a tracker has definitely helped. I use a free app called Habits on my android phone.

What are the habits that bring me joy?

Creating a morning routine.

Meditating using the headspace app.

Journaling with the five minute journal.

Listening to podcasts and books while I drive. I use the audible app.

Using a habit tracker.

Completing a yearly review.

Having my photos printed and displaying them in my home.
